Striker Jack Marriott is set to miss the rest of the Championship season as Sheffield Wednesday gear up for a crucial trio of fixtures.

The Sheffield Star claim that an unknown injury has left the 26-year-old unable to contribute at the end of a loan spell which has been, on the whole, disappointing.

Marriott joined The Owls on a season-long loan from Derby County with the likes of Tom Lawrence, Colin Kazim-Richards and Wayne Rooney laying greater claim to the Rams’s centre-forward spot in the early stages of the season.

He was a regular fixture in the opening weeks at Hillsborough, but the former Peterborough man has only featured sparsely since November after a season hampered by injuries.

Marriott has now scored just three league goals in his past two season in the Championship, a poor return for a striker who found the net 27 times in his final League One season.

His 12 goalless appearances for Wednesday will certainly have fallen short of many fans’ expectations, but this latest cruel injury blow leaves him unable to make amends as Darren Moore’s side head into an absolutely crucial final three games.

The Owls are second from bottom and must make up a four point deficit against Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and a mouth-watering final day tie against Derby County.

The whole scenario leaves Marriott’s Championship future uncertain. He has failed to impress at a side facing relegation, while his parent club could soon be following suit. Undoubtedly, the striker will need to work hard to regain some scoring momentum next campaign.
