Lewis Holtby was one of the most talented players to come out of Schalke 04’s academy before he made his move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2013. Unfortunately, the move never went to plan, and the German midfielder could never recover his top form after arriving in London.
Holtby made the move to Blackburn Rovers in September 2019 after Hamburg released him. The former German international has made exactly 50 appearances at Ewood Park under Tony Mowbray, but has never looked like making a substantial impact
The midfielder’s dip in form is also due to a knee issue that has kept him out of the team for several months, and with Holtby expected to return next month, his future at the club will be determined by his performances over the coming weeks and months.
Holtby is out of contract in the summer, but if he makes a successful return from the injury, perhaps he will be offered an extension. Blackburn are currently sitting in 13th place in the Championship and an in-form Holtby can help kickstart his side’s currently faltering play-off hopes.
The German is not the only player who is in this situation at the club. The likes of Joe Rothwell, Bradley Johnson, Corry Evans and Stewart Downing are all also out of contract at the end of this season.
With a host of midfielders sitting in the dugout, things might not be easy for the former Schalke star to make an immediate impact after returning from injury, but he must be hoping to make use of the chances he gets to impress the manager as well as the owners.
The Rovers are suffering from a dip in form and have lost their last four games and have therefore slipped down the ranks into the midtable. The 30-year-old midfielder would hope to get back into the team and stop the slump in order to get himself a new contract.
