Daniel Stendel on the touchline at Oakwell against Leeds United

According to Portsmouth Live, Daniel Stendel is on the shortlist for the vacant Portsmouth job. The 46-year-old German has been identified by the Pompey hierarchy as a possible replacement for Kenny Jackett, who has been sacked after a poor run of form.

The German manager is wanted by Pompey on a deal until the end of the season, but he is said to prefer a longer deal. The ex-striker spent his entire playing career in Germany with the likes of Hamburg, St. Pauli and SV Meppen. He joined the world of football management almost a decade after hanging up his boots.

Stendel started out as a manager in his native Germany with Hannover 96 and spent a year with them in the Bundesliga before he was sacked. The German then moved to England in June 2018 to join Barnsley.

Stendel is very highly rated following his miraculous promotion with Barnsley to Championship in 2018-19. The Frankfurt-born manager signed a two-year deal at Oakwell and guided the Tykes to promotion from League One in his first season at the club. However, he couldn’t replicate his magic in Championship, and even though he was a popular figure at the Yorkshire side, his managerial stint with the club ended abruptly in October 2019 after nine games without a win.

After leaving Barnsley, Stendel took a short break from management, later returning with Hearts for the 2019-20 season. However, he won’t like to remember his short stint in Scotland, as he just managed to win 5 of 17 with the Edinburgh side. Hearts were at the bottom of the 2019–20 Scottish Premiership at the time the league was suspended due to the coronavirus and were subsequently relegated. Stendel left the club instantly after the relegation was confirmed, as he had a relegation clause in his contract.

Despite struggling in his previous two jobs, Stendel could be a good option for Portsmouth. The young German manager has been a success in the League One and knows how to get promoted.
