Derby County boss Wayne Rooney has confirmed that two key players have failed to recover in time for his side’s crucial tie with Swansea City this afternoon.
Defender Andre Wisdom sustained a groin injury in their recent hammering at Preston North End, meanwhile Everton loanee Beni Baningime is still sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Wisdom has been a mainstay in the Rams’s defence this season, appearing in 38 of their 44 matches, while his big game experience with the likes of Liverpool and Red Bull Salzburg mean he will be a big miss in the next hurdle of Derby’s fight against the drop.
Baningime, meanwhile, is a young player with markedly less experience than Wisdom. The 22-year-old midfielder arrived from Everton in February on a short-term loan until the end of the season but has only touched the field twice.
Despite this, Baningime’s time under Ancelotti and the rest of Everton’s heavy-hitters have made him a player with the kind of class that Rooney’s side could have depended on in this season’s final two games.
This latest blow adds to the lengthening injury list at Pride Park, with the previously mentioned duo joining Lee Gregory, Teden Mengi, Jack Stretton, Curtis Davies and Krystian Bielik on the sidelines.
Hovering four points above the relegation zone, and having played a game more than Rotherham United below them, County still have their Championship survival in their own hands.
After five defeats in a row, Rooney’s side are certainly due a result. With Wisdom and Baningime not yet ready to return to action, it will have to be done the hard way against a quality side in Swansea City.
