AZ Alkmaar have completed the signing of Norwich City target Sam Beukema from Go Ahead Eagles.
According to reports by Dutch outlet De Stentor, the Canaries were showing interest in the 22-year-old centre-back. The Championship table toppers wanted to bring the player in ready for what’s likely to be a Premier League campaign next season.
Beukema has been plying his trade for Dutch Second Division side Go Ahead Eagles. The young defender has been in scintillating form and has featured in all but one game this season, helping them maintain their strong run of form. The club have been enjoying impressive results with Beukema at the heart of their defensive line.
Beukema has been part of a side that has won 12 games without losing since December 4.
The signing of Beukema might have come as a shock to the Canaries, as they were looking favourites to sign the youngster.
The former FC Twente Academy product will link up with AZ in the summer, once the 2020/21 campaign has come to an end. The Deventer-born youngster will be with the club till the summer of 2026 after signing a 5-year deal with the Eredivisie side.
The Go Ahead Eagles star form has been somehow unbelievable. The youngster has been a vital cog in Kees van Wonderen’s starting 11 this season. Beukema has made 29 appearances across all competitions and has scored an impressive eight goals.
With Beukema moving to AZ and not Norwich, it will be interesting to see what other options Daniel Farke is likely to explore ahead of next season. The Canaries sit top of the Championship with just eight games remaining and are firm favourites to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking. With that in mind, Farke is not likely to make the same mistakes as in season 2018/19, when Norwich got promoted to Premier League and failed to add players to their squad, which led them to get relegated immediately the next season.
